Before Cian’s birthday party

This little feller’s first birthday is coming up on Saturday. The parents came in with a gift voucher to get their portrait taken.

To take Cian’s first portrait was a gift for me! He is such a friendly child, looking always where I am and he was smiling all the time. It was a great fun for the whole family.

Thanks Cian and have a wonderful birthday party!

Yesterday on my way to Cork I met a lady from the Netherlands at the Macroom bus station. She was on her way to the Airport and was waiting for the bus as well.
When we arrived in Cork she asked where I was from because of my accent. She had a bit of time before the bus to the Airport was leaving and I decided to start my Christmas shopping tour later. We had a great coffee together and it was if I would know Wilma already for a long time. Wilma runs a hotel in a beautiful place of the Netherlands called Bergen. Someday I will visit Wilma to continue our chat!

It was a very good start of the day and this message goes to her: ” Hi Wilma, Thanks for the good time yesterday in Cork. I always wish you many lovely guests! Best regards!”

Altogether – meeting people and the lights of Christmas – it was a very good day for me! Merry Christmas!

I found this article on my favorite sites for professional photographers. I totally agree to this arguments.

“There are hundreds of thousands of new and part time photographers who are promoting themselves as professional photographers. What many legitimate professionals do not realize is just how much damage these newcomers cause everyone. For example, when a so-called professional acts unprofessional, that reflects on everyone in the industry. We are hearing about churches that do not allow any professional photographers inside the church because of past negative experiences. Many people do not realize how much of a difference there is between just any newbie snap shooter and a true professional.

When these illegitimates show their work, which often looks very amateur like, this also tends to taint the attitude of the public as to what they think they can expect from a professional photographer. The illegitimate photographer does not wear a beginner badge. Instead, they show off the same IPPA membership certificate many legitimate photographers show. How is the public supposed to know the difference?

The illegitimates tend to offer much lower prices, often because they are not paying the appropriate taxes, insurance, licenses, and have not invested huge sums of money and time in training. However, by offering low prices, this also reflects on the perceived value of professional photography in general. The public is often looking for a low price and does not care if the photographer is paying their taxes. They go for the price.

The rapidly rising flood of illegitimates is indeed hurting the profession but as things are structured now, the only thing that the true professional can do is to more effectively promote themselves and their product to get the public to recognize that there really is a difference. This will require public education and that can be difficult but not necessarily expensive. The public must be educated that there is a difference.”

We are so lucky! Since a few days we have the best Spring weather in Ireland! Let the sunshine in your heart!

I like to get my coffee from Centra every morning. On my way down to my studio the sun was my companion always. This makes a good mood!

It makes me happy when I see people on the road with a smile. It makes me happy too when I hand over an excellent product and I can see the smile on the customers face.

I know the time is a little difficult everywhere at the moment. But – let the sunshine in your heart!

Caring about Copyright

I would love to copy every picture presented by my customers.

But – I want and must be very careful to do things against the copyright law. Copyright, that means, the photographer taking the picture has all the rights on his/her pictures and nobody else.
If the picture has a copyright notice on the back, I can only copy the picture if my client can obtain a written permissions from the photographer who took the pictures. If the picture was taken by a photographer and has no copyright notice on the back, that does not mean there is no copyright on that image and therefore it can only be copied when written permission is granted.

The same copyright law applies to all of my own photography work which I would like to have respected too.
This applies to all professional photographers in Ireland and many other countries. This is a guide for all amateurs too.

Start to think about “copyright”. Respect the work of others.

Yesterday was bright and sunny. I spent the day in my studio preparing all our albums and promotional material for a couple who are getting married in December 2010. I enjoy this preparation – it gives me the chance to look at some of our previous weddings.

Sheila from Gneeveguilla came in and told me that she was very happy to see me – and she booked a confirmation portrait for next Monday.

A few months ago I had decided to move to Cobh. We had found a nice studio there next to a lovely house and were going about starting a new business in that area. For various reasons we changed our minds and I am happy to be here for customers like Sheila. She thought I was gone and rang the mobile on the shopfront and was surprised it was me. So, she was delighted to see me and her nice words about our last portrait session (last year) gave me a good feeling for the whole day.
